Christian music has come a long way... from gospel to contemporary, from rock to country, and even alternative and punk! I was introduced to Christian music while I was in college (the first time, as an undergrad) back in the mid-80s and was very surprised to find that yes, it sounded good! The first three records (see how long ago it was???) that I heard were Sweet Comfort Band's "Hearts Afire," Steve Taylor's "Meltdown," and Leslie Phillips' " Dancing With Danger." All that good stuff and I hadn't even heard Amy Grant yet! Since then, I was fortunate enough to work for a major Christian recording label for a number of years, where I was introduced to even more cutting-edge music with "positive lyrics." What impressed me the most, however, about the artists on this label was the fact that they didn't just talk the talk, but they walked the walk... offstage! They weren't get-in-your-face-preach-at-you people on Sunday while living a different life Monday through Saturday. They had integrity - and I respected that. Go find a Margaret Becker CD and take a listen. I think you'll hear what I mean. |
