Okay, here's the scene. You are walking through a cemetery, minding your own business, pondering your own inevitable mortality, when a particular tombstone catches your eye. You read the inscription, expecting the usual pathetic pieties. Perhaps "Gone But Not Forgotten." Maybe "Not Dead, But Only Sleeping." (Does that mean they buried someone alive?) But instead, the inscription says something unexpected. Something bizarre. Something FUNNY. You start to laugh, and the shock of seeing something so funny on such an unlikely source makes you laugh even harder.
This ever happen to you? If not, you should hang out in cemeteries more often.
There is a lot of great comedy material out there. Tombstone humor seems to fall
into two major categories:
(1) Comic phrases placed on the stone as a means of offering the world
a final joke, or
(2) Completely unintentional humor.
That's often the best kind.
I have always been interested in gravestones that brighten up the gloom of the cemetery with a little gallows humor and collected amusing epitaphs the same way other boys collected baseball cards. Whenever possible, I would acquire photos of these funereal Henny Youngmans. I now offer them to the public for perusal in the form of postcards that will take your friends aback.
All stones and inscriptions are authentic; the locations are identified on the posters and postcards. Bookmark us if you like what you see, because new items will be added sporadically.
If you know of any funny gravestones in your
vicinity, I'd love to hear from you!
Yes, get your loved ones some gifts from gravehumor and they will never forget you....ever.
